CORDEX Data Extractor

What is Cordex Data Extractor software?

This Windows desktop software is purpose-built for efficiently extracting data from CORDEX NetCDF files, facilitating seamless access to the desired time series. It offers the capability to temporarily merge CORDEX NetCDF files, empowering users to define start and end times and specify locations using standard latitude and longitude coordinates (WGS84), without the need for specialized knowledge of NetCDF databases or programming.

Under the hood, the tool leverages the Unidata netCDF-Java Library to execute these operations smoothly. In the event of encountering an error, the software automatically adjusts by converting standard coordinates to rotated coordinates, aligning with the rotation axis of Cordex domains.

Moreover, if the tool encounters any issues in extracting your file, you are entitled to a refund. However, it's worth noting that for optimal performance in this domain, the recommended tool is the Open NC File tool..

Rotation of Coordinates Based On CORDEX Domains

What is rotated pole grid?

A rotated pole grid, also known as a rotated latitude-longitude grid or rotated coordinate system, is a type of grid used in climate and atmospheric modeling to simplify computations in regions where the standard latitude-longitude grid is not optimal.

In a rotated pole grid, the Earth's axis of rotation is shifted to a new location, typically along a meridian or a great circle. This rotation reorients the grid so that it aligns more closely with the features of interest in the region being modeled.

By using a rotated pole grid, modelers can reduce grid distortion and improve accuracy in regions with complex terrain or strong spatial gradients, such as polar regions or mountainous areas. This can lead to more accurate simulations of atmospheric processes and better representation of climate variability and change in these regions.

How can I use Cordex Data Extractor?

This software operates smoothly with minimal user intervention, negating the necessity for a help file. All computations are handled within the software's backend code. In the 'CORDEX Data Extractor,' users merely need to input their desired latitude and longitude (ensuring it aligns with the spatial border of the file), specify the start and end dates for the desired time series, and provide the variable name from the NetCDF file.

Users can easily access the list of variables on the right side of the page under the 'Files' column. Clicking on each file enables users to view the list of variables contained within the CORDEX file. This versatile tool possesses the capability to extract data from any CORDEX NetCDF file across various time scales, models, RCM models, RCP scenarios, and domains.

1. Download the tool from the provided link and install CDE by clicking on "CDE Installer.msi".

2. Open your CORDEX NetCDF file by clicking on the icon in the top bar.

3. Click on the start and end dates for the period you wish to extract (based on your files) and select the appropriate dates.

Notice: If your file is in daily format, there's no need to specify hours and minutes. Similarly, if your file is in monthly format, there's no need to specify days...
